Grain ventilation: why it is important during storage

During storage, maintaining suitable conditions within the grain mass is important to support correct product preservation.

Grain ventilation allows air to circulate through the stored product, helping to manage temperature and internal conditions while the grain remains inside the silo.

How grain ventilation works

Air is distributed inside the silo through dedicated ventilation systems installed in the lower part of the structure.

The system configuration may vary depending on the silo dimensions, the stored product and the operating requirements.

The aim is to achieve the most uniform possible distribution of air throughout the grain mass.

An element to consider from the design stage

Grain ventilation should not be considered as a component to be added at a later stage, but as an integral part of the overall storage system design.

The main factors to be considered include:

  • type of stored product;
  • silo capacity and geometry;
  • air volume and distribution;
  • characteristics of the ventilation system;
  • environmental conditions in which the plant operates.

Proper storage also means controlling storage conditions

A storage plant does not simply have the function of containing the product.

Managing the internal conditions of the silo contributes to the correct preservation of the grain throughout the storage period.

For this reason, ventilation is one of the elements to be considered when designing an efficient storage system.

Why temperature and air distribution are important

Ventilation helps cool the grain mass and maintain conditions that are more favourable for preservation.

To be effective, the airflow should be distributed as evenly as possible through the stored product, avoiding areas of the grain mass that receive insufficient ventilation.

For this reason, the system is sized according to the type of product, the storage configuration and the specific requirements of the plant.

Ventilation and silo configuration

The ventilation system must be defined according to the silo configuration and the characteristics of the stored product.

Depending on the type of plant, different solutions can be adopted, including platform, tunnel, inverted-cone or channel ventilation systems.

In flat-bottom silos, for example, air channels can be incorporated into the concrete base and completed with perforated elements that allow airflow to be distributed throughout the grain mass.
