The Japanese ambassador visits the WFP plant designed and built by Mulmix.

The historic Padua-based company specialized in engineering, production and installation of agro-industrial units, port grain storage facilities and revamping of old plants has for months a fixed-site technician at the Djibouti headquarters of the Humanitarian Organization.

May 2020

In 2015 Mulmix, a company operating in the agro-industrial sector, based in the province of Padua, Italy won the International Tender launched by the United Nations branch World Food Programme (WFP) for the design and installation of their first cereal storage plant in the horn of Africa.

Recall that WFP is one of the most important NGOs that deals with humanitarian aid, assisting millions of people in the most deprived areas of the world affected by hunger, famine and wars.

The opening of a Humanitarian Logistics Base (HLB) with storage silos in Djibouti had been seen as an indispensable solution to support all humanitarian operations in the Horn of Africa.

The storage silos, large in size and with a total capacity to store 40,000 tons of grains, present in the HLB, are suitable for storing 4 different types of products at the same time. The products, once unloaded, are sent to the 4 bagging lines for packing and then sent quickly to the territories in difficulty.

The storage, within the Logistic Center, has a very important value for what are the guidelines of a zero-hunger strategic plan in accordance with both what the Djibouti government would like to carry out and with the framework of assistance for the development of United Nations for the period 2018-2022.

The United Nations Food Program receives important international economic aid from many countries to bring humanitarian aid to the world and, in April of this year, it welcomed the donation received by the Japanese government.

Part of the amount is destined for Djibouti and will be used for the distribution of food, nutritional support and to improve the resistance capacity of small farmers against natural disasters.

In recent days, probably also following this important donation (about USD 7.5 million in total for Kenya, Somalia and Djibouti, of which USD 800,000 for Djibouti), the Ambassador of Japan Koji Yonetani, the Secretary General of the Ministry of agricultural, water, livestock and fishery resources Ibrahim Elmi Mohamed and the representative of the World Food Programme in Djibouti, Ms Mutinta Chimuka, participated in the launch of the food assistance project and in the rehabilitation of agro-pastoral activities at the Humanitarian Department of WFP Logistics to meet needs in the context of the COVID-19 epidemic.

This Japan-funded project is very important for the country because it aims to provide food aid to populations affected by the COVID-19 epidemic and the plague of locusts and to support agro-pastoral activities to make them more resistant to the impacts of natural phenomena.

Mulmix has now fixed its own technician in the HLB WFP for months with several important tasks including: supervising the operations related to the storage site, helping to improve the organization and quality of work to increase profitability, guarantee a permanent connection between the different parties involved in the loading and unloading operations of the silos, providing continuous technical training to the people present in the Hub and providing technical-logistic assistance for the team working on the maintenance of the system. The Mulmix technician, now considered a very important member of the WFP team, was able to closely follow this important visiting delegation.

All the guests declared themselves enthusiastic about the WFP site, the management and the work that the Humanitarian Organization carries out every day in these territories.
